India road vehicle production / sales / export - SIAM
SIAM provides annual data on the number of road vehicles (automotive) produced, sold domestically, and exported.
Overview
Vehicles are categorised by SIAM as follows:
Passenger Vehicles: includes (i) Passenger Cars – Hatchbacks, sedans, MPVs, coupes, etc. (ii) Utility Vehicles (UVs) – SUVs, crossovers, MUVs. (iii) Vans – Vehicles with a van-type body used mainly for passenger transport.
Commercial Vehicles: includes Goods Carriers, divided into (i) Light Commercial Vehicles (LCV) – Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) up to 7.5 tonnes, and (ii) Medium & Heavy Commercial Vehicles (M&HCV) – GVW above 7.5 tonnes (includes trucks, tippers, etc.); and Passenger Carriers, which includes Buses and minibuses in LCV and M&HCV ranges
Three Wheelers: designed for carrying either passengers or cargo. Two major sub-categories: (i) Passenger Three-Wheelers (Auto-rickshaws), and (ii) Goods Three-Wheelers (small cargo carriers)
Two Wheelers: SIAM classifies them into: (i) Scooters, (ii) Motorcycles / Motorbikes, (iii) Mopeds, (iv) Electric Two Wheelers (E2W)
Quadricycles: A relatively new category in India. A light four-wheeled vehicle, smaller and lower-powered than a regular car. Key features are: Maximum kerb weight ~475 kg (varies slightly by rule); Used primarily for last-mile urban mobility; Lower speed and power compared to passenger cars,
